Masterclass 1 – Does professional development make a difference to the learning lives of students?
Presenter: Professor John Hattie, Professor of Education and Director, Melbourne Education Research Institute, University of Melbourne

The session will review the evidence about the effectiveness of professional development (PD) and professional learning communities. It will also consider:

a. whether there is evidence of this PD on the learning lives of students, or whether it stops with the school leaders and teachers;

b. whether there are critical factors that maximise the return to student learning; and

c. key success conditions for effective PD.


Masterclass 2 – Getting cut-through on school improvement: professional learning that works
Presenter: Dr Ben Jensen, CEO, Learning First

How do we make sure our students make great progress? By continually developing great teaching. Drawing on what works in the best school systems worldwide, Ben will explore what really effective teacher professional development looks like, and the steps school leaders can take to put it into practice.

Masterclass 3 – Leading continuity of learning through age-appropriate pedagogies
Presenter: Associate Professor Beverley Flückiger, School of Education and Professional Studies, Griffith University

Implementing evidence-based pedagogical change requires strong and visionary leadership. Continuity of learning is enhanced when the pedagogies employed both engage learners and enhance learning outcomes. This Masterclass will consider the research behind the Department’s Age Appropriate Pedagogies Pilot, the key messages in support of continuity and the innovative practices of school leaders and teachers in implementing a range and balance of pedagogies.

Masterclass 4 – Senior assessment reforms
Presenter: Leanne Nixon, Assistant Director-General, State Schools - Performance

With new systems for senior assessment and tertiary entrance due to commence in 2019, Principals are looking to determine how a new assessment model, strengthened school-based assessment, and a new tertiary entrance system will look in their schools. This master class will provide the latest information about the reforms and will welcome discussion around impacts and implementation strategies relevant to each school’s journey.

Ask the awkward, inappropriate or uncomfortable questions you've always wanted to know the answers to, but have been too afraid to ask. 


Masterclass 6 – Digital resilience
Presenter: Professor Jane Burns, Professor of Innovation and Industry, Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Sydney

Internet use among young people is close to universal in Australia, and the Young and Well National Survey shows that the number of hours that young people spend online per day has almost doubled from an average of 2.3 hours in 2008 to 4.5 hours in 2014. Critical to supporting the wellbeing of young people is getting the balance of technology use right. This balance must be between supporting young people to feel safe and supported online while at the same time acknowledging that technologies can play a critical role in building resilience and promoting wellbeing. This talk will explore how technology, as a powerful tool, can be used to empower young people to make choices about their wellbeing.
